Does my Dell PC have a power converter built in for the UK and Europe?
I like in the US What do I need to make my laptop work in Europe/UK since I am traveling to both for 3 months... I really do not want to fry it

Answer 1 :
Well, you'll need the appropriate plug. Every country/region has its own outlet shape. Check the power brick on your charger- if it says 110-240V anywhere on it, that should be all you'll need. The laptop actually can only take about 20V and it has to be DC, so that brick converts the AC coming from the outlet into a lower voltage DC. Many power bricks can handle both the 110V U.S. power supply and the 240V European power supplies.
Answer 2 :
Check the power supply on your computer. If it says that the input voltage is 110 then you may have problems - most European countries use 220-240 volts. If your power supply says something along the lines of 110-240 volt input then you should be fine. The same goes for any other chargers you may want to use - mobile phones, batteries and so on. You will need an adaptor for your plug - most European countries use round pin sockets while the British system is a three prong one - but you shouldn't have any problems getting hold of those.

What is a reasonably priced accessory to turn a laptop to a car navigator usable in both US and Europe?

Answer 1 :
For one that also includes Europe, I don't think you'll find one reasonably priced. I recommend getting away from using your laptop for serious navigation. Laptops are ok for plotting routes and finding places, but for on the fly real time navigation in both The US and Europe, I have to recommend the Tom Tom. Check it out at Best Buy or the link below. I ran Microsoft streets and trips for 5 years on my laptop with GPS, and it was very hard to manipulate the program while driving if I needed to for an alternate route or something. The new Tom Tom is just great. I love it. Ps. Check out some of their other things for laptops and PDA's you might find what you need. Good luck.
Answer 2 :
something compatible with your opperating systems;i.e.tom.tom.(research required).not an easy task

Do I need power adaptor or plug adaptor for my laptop in France?

Do I need power adaptor or plug adaptor for my laptop in France?
I heard that most U.S. laptops do not require a power adaptor for Europe. I just bought a Toshiba laptop and I am planning on taking it to France. Can someone (with technical experience, please!) tell me if this is safe? Also, where is the cheapest place to get a plug adaptor? Thanks in advance.
Laptops & Notebooks - 1 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The AC-DC brick of your laptop is likely compatible internationally. This is done so that the manufacturer saves money by only having to make and stock one product. Check to make sure that the adapter says Input: 100-240V, 50/60Hz. If it does, there is no problem electronically. You will, however, need an adapter to the French plugs. There are two types, but the most useful and most common is the Europlug. Unsurprisingly, it works in pretty much every continental European country (careful, so NOT the UK). The Europlug will also fit into the other type of socket that is used in France. You do not need a voltage converter for most DC-powered devices (AC-DC converters, power bricks, phone chargers, battery chargers), but again check for 100-250V, 50/60Hz labeling. Using USA equipment not labeled for 250V is a safety hazard! The USA-Europlug adapter is available for US$2.00 at http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/AP-EU/USA-TO-EURO-PLUG-ADAPTER/-/1.html . The Europlug is terribly convenient and mine gets a workout about once a year.

Answer 1 :
Look on your AC adapter. Do you see writing that states a range of voltages like "120V - 240V, 50-60 Hz" or something similar? That means the adapter will work on both US and European current, so all you need are AC plug converters for the appropriate countries that you will be visiting. You can get the common Europlug adapters at Radio Shack or electronic stores for fairly cheap. According to the Dell specifications, the AC adapter is a multivoltage adapter and will work pretty much anywhere with the right plug conveter. https://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/ins600m/en/om/T8109bk2LRs.pdf Plug types by country http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity_by_country
Answer 2 :
You can use this: http://www.topmic.com/141-0703.html It works with all North American products. You just plug your electronic devices into that and that into the wall of where you are. It works all over the word, and it plays the role of converter AND adapter. Which means you don't need an adapter that is connected to the outlet, then a converter connected to the adapter, then your device connected to the converter. Its really nice. I would highly recommend it. As I said, it works all over the world which means if you travel again, use it again! Best of luck.

An international AC adapter that converts the current to 120V (so you can plug in your laptop power supply)
Answer 2 :
your laptop will work anywhere with wifi :)
Answer 3 :
probably one of the power cord tip that is compatable with the one that europe is using
Answer 4 :
You will need a network wi-fi connection point, along with the right outlet plug in for the walls. I think you can get them from dell.
Answer 5 :
You'll need the correct AC plug for European outlets and voltage. Some plugs for the computer connection are already capable of making the switch by using an adapter from Dell. Contact them to see what you need. So many people travel with computers these days, the manufacturers make it easy to take them abroad.

How to connect and successfully setup a router with a laptop?

How to connect and successfully setup a router with a laptop? I am from Malta Europe?
I would like to know how to successfully connect and setup a router with a laptop, knowing that my friend has a router and a laptop and she would like to connect her router with her laptop directly, and not leave the Internet connection hoocked up with her desktop computer directly. I also would like to point out, that my friend is from and lives in Malta Europe, therefore, her Internet Service provider is, GO. I would appreciate it very much, if you would kindly guide me step-by-step of how to successfully connect and set up a router with a laptop who has also the Internet service provided by GO in Malta Europe. With that said, I'm going to close this very important question by saying, I look forward to receive many helpful replies.

Answer 1 :
To connect your router to your computer, first, place your wire modem or DSL modem and unplug it to revolve it off. After that, attach your wireless router to your modem. Your modem should keep on linked directly to the Internet. Afterward, after you have enthusiastic the whole thing up, your computer will wirelessly attach to your router, and the router will throw connections through your modem to the Internet. After that, fix your router to your modem. If you at present have your computer associated openly to your modem: Unplug the network wire from the backside of your computer, and close it into the port tagged Internet, WAN, or WLAN on the backside of router. If you do not at present have a computer linked to the Internet: Plug one side of a network wire into your modem, and close the other end of the network wire into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on your wireless router. If you at present have your computer linked to a router: Unplug the network wire linked to the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port from your present router, and close this side of the wire into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on your wireless router. Then, unplug some extra network cables, and close them into the accessible ports on your wireless router. You no longer require your creative router, because your original wireless router returns it.
Answer 2 :
The answerer before me gave a good answer. I'd just like to point out that GO has an excellent customer service. If she still hasn't set up the connection she can call them on their freephone and they'll tell her how to connect it step by step. Hehe I should know. I connected mine wirelessly some 3 years ago and I was so ignorant about it all that I held the phone and did as instructed till it was all done.

Should I Buy A Laptop And Good Camera For Europe

Should I Buy A Laptop And Good Camera For Europe?
Next summer I'm going to Europe for 3 weeks on a trip through band and choir. I've never traveled internationally before so I'm not sure what kinds of electronics and such I should take, specifically a laptop and really good digital camera. I have a basic kodak right now, it's 8.2 MP and takes pretty good pics. But I want to know if I should get one thats really good, because I'm an amateur photographer and a photographic opportunity in Europe would be a sad thing to miss with a camera that isn't as good. also; should i get a laptop to put pictures on so I dont have to take so many memory cards? I have a tendency to take loads of pics on small things to I know I will take even more on this trip. do they have wireless internet at most hotels in Europe? I'm going to places like London, Paris, and Athens but I'm not sure if I could access free internet over there, and if I can do I need anything special for it? I know I have loads of questions, but any help is appreciated! Thanks! thanks for the tips especially about the voltage. that helps a lot. but I really need to know if it would be beneficial to me if I did bring a laptop or would it be impractical. I'm not backpacking I'm taking a bus and flights so it won't be hard traveling. If you have any firsthand experiences please share! same with a really nice digital camera, Im thinking a canon probably an EOS Rebel. does anyone know if that would be a good idea to take it or would it just be too much of a hassle. even if I do, i plan on taking my smaller one if we go out to dinner or to museums and such because they arent going to want someone taking bunches of pics at the Louvre probably!

Otherwise to will need a voltage transformer in addition to the plug adapter. Wireless LAN is common in most European hotels in London, Paris or Athens.

Answer 1 :
Many places in Europe uses 220V at 50Hz, so you will need a power supply that will support that. However, you should get an adaptor kit, as not all countries use the same kind of outlet.
Answer 2 :
YES All you need is a small adapter that fits the AC end. European countries have larger ends on the plug. Radio Shack used to sell them. Anyway your power supply can already use EU electricity, you just cant plug it in without the end being correct. The laptop transformers are autoswitching/sensing they can run from 100-240v . As long as it is a modern laptop from PII to P4. The cost should be $20 or less for the plug set (which includes Japan/EU and some other countries) Check Ebay. Remember you don't need a whole powersupply, just the ends

should I bring my laptop to europe trip?
Should I bring my laptop there on my trip? can I recharge it there? I should say: can I bring laptop when I head to other countires, such as Egypt and Turkey. I am going on a trip with my family but I didnt have my homework complete yet. I know the voltage is different from there. I am planning to do my work on the airplane or while we are waiting for the next flight.. Can I recharge my laptop on airplane and the airport? camera and ipod would be able to recharge there too? Thanks!!!

Answer 1 :
yes just bring your adapter :)
Answer 2 :
WHY? Are you going all the way to Europe to play on your computer? They have internet cafes. You can use them to keep in touch.
Answer 3 :
Every time I have gone abroad I have brought my laptop thinking I would do homework or use it when I got bored, but that never happened. I recommend not bringing your laptop and doing your homework when you get back home, or going to an internet cafe and doing it there. It's a hassle to carry an expensive object around, and you'll always be worrying about it. Unless you're first class, you're not going to be able to charge your pc on the flight. Keep in mind not all airports have free wireless, and outlets are usually limited. Every time I have been at the airport in Beijing, Hong Kong and Madrid all the outlets were already taken by other people. Sometimes you have to fight for them! As for your iPod and camera, I wouldn't worry about the voltage, just the plug in. You should buy a converter before you leave to be safe. Overall not worth the hassle. Enjoy sightseeing and the company of your family!
Answer 4 :
I have travelled with my laptop and found it both an inconvenience and a god send. Firstly, chargers. Because phones, cameras and computers are designed to used where you go, they adapters can handle different voltage inputs, basically US 110v and British 220 v. The problem is plugging them into the wall. Make sure you read up about what sort of power plug adapter you will need. Many hotels can supply one for you. Now the problem with laptops is 1. They can be heavy. Mine is larger, wasn't bought to be portable. I am jealous of friends with little netbooks on the road. The advantage 1. Be able to surf local information, eg weather, bus routes etc whereever you are. 2. Sure you are travelling, but you will have time by yourself, check your email, chat with friends. 3. Put your photos in your computer and upload them. Basically if your computer is small and portable it is worth brining.

Nope, unless the area it's in is REALLY hot.

It can because I went to Portugal and had a plug for my laptop and after 2 days the charger started to smoke and it caught fire even though my computer was off but I was lucky to put it out without any trouble so don't do it unless you use it for a few minutes or maybe an hour depending on the brand of the plug.

Where can i get the best gamer laptop in Europe the cheapest?

Where can i get the best gamer laptop in Europe the cheapest?
So.. Since i'm a working man, i'm in need of a laptop that doesn't confine itself to work. i'm looking for a beast, that is capable of playing the latest games at an average level. I'm not awfully picky, but naturally there are a few musts: minimum 2 year guarantee. minimum screen size 15.5" a decent speaker system. (not necessarily high def, but definitely not one of those laptops that can't be heard unless you're literally pushing your ear against the speaker. Specs that can backup the claim. i've found a ton of laptops (which is mainly why i'm trying yahoo answers now) which have some amazing specs like a good graphics card, a decent processor (duo core 2.5 GHz eg.), but then instead have 3 gb DDR2 ram, which basically kills everything else. like i said: design, brand and so on is completely irrelevant to me, but i need a laptop that isn't glued together in last minute (hence the guarantee requirement) and that has sensible, good specs. price: 1300 € total, must be shippable to Denmark.

What kind of voltage converter should i get?

I brought my dell laptop in Eastern Europe(Moldova). What kind of voltage converter should i get?
How many watts/ampers should it have. I've been adviced that a 60 W (110 v to 220 v)would work , but also that i need a 100 W. Which should I buy? ALso, I have a Kodak V 570 camera. Do i need a voltage convertor as well?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Your best bet is to contact Dell and ask them for the proper choice for converters.
Answer 2 :
as far as the dell laptop is concerned, or for that matter any laptop > no voltage conversion or transformation is needed most adaptors are built to operate with an input voltage of 100 to 250 volts ac, and deliver a constant dc voltage output > 19.5 volts dc in your case so no worry about the volts, amps & watts > just use it the way it is., only bother could be the shape / configuration of the plug & socket & a simple universal connector should be a couple of bucks ! < just to be doubly sure, read the input voltage specs on adapter

Would it be worth buying a laptop to travel in Europe or just use their internet cafes?

Would it be worth buying a laptop to travel in Europe or just use their internet cafes?
So Im travelling to Europe this July. Im going to: ENGLAND ~ BELGIUM ~ HOLLAND ~ GERMANY ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ SLOVAKIA ~ HUNGARY ~ AUSTRIA ~ ITALY ~ SWITZERLAND ~ FRANCE I'll be staying in 4-5 star hotels that are centrally located in the city. Should I buy a laptop for my travels or just make do with internet cafes? Is it easy to find in Europe?
Other - Europe - 12 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It will be cheaper to use internet cafes
Answer 2 :
Get a notebook not to heavy
Answer 3 :
i would rather buy a laptop cuz if u just do cafes, then ull have to wait for people to use them. and if u hav ur own laptop, u hav better privacy than using the cafes!
Answer 4 :
i think use their cafes but yes your own laptap give u more freedom thin is u mite have prob in conecting and stuff or mite even losss it so better to use cafe if u not sure abt connection and takin care u have to keep cheking it wil disturb your fun <at that wat happed to me>
Answer 5 :
Most 4-5 star hotels provide free internet access, so it would be a money and time saver to have your own laptop. I travel with mine, and I enjoy the freedom and access it afforded--especially if it was a boring day in the hotel. Be sure to check if your laptop is dual voltage. If it isn't, you'll have to use a voltage converter. Also you'll need the adapter plugs for the various countries.
Answer 6 :
Use internet cafés instead of the laptop. Wireless connection pricing is just incredibly high here in Europe right now!!
Answer 7 :
I would recommend using the internet cafes. Reason being each country has different electrical voltages and each country has a different type of plug. So if you are traveling to the UK for example, the UK standard voltage is 220 with a completely different plug than the US. This means 220 volts will "fry" your US computer if you do not have a plug that also regulates the voltage. Even if you have several different plug adapters that regulate voltage you still run the risk of power surges or other damage to your laptop. Granted internet cafes can be expensive it does not beat having to pay several hundred dollars to replace a laptop. My advice would be unless you need your laptop for work then you are better off using internet cafes.
Answer 8 :
You're travelling to Europe and you're worried about having a laptop with you? Are you so blase about Europe that you'd rather be spending your time online instead of being engaged with the reality around you? If that's the case, save your money and stay home and watch 'Lonely Planet', or 'Rick Steves' on tv. Come on. If you need an occasional internet fix just go to a cafe and be done with it. Why lug an an extra piece of luggage around with you?
Answer 9 :
You can find lots of places to go on line here without having to lug a laptop around with you on the trip. It is true that a lot of hotels have internet connectivity, but don't count on it being free. There are a few places like the hotel Verona that have free internet, but it can be pretty expensive in other places. The hotel I'm in right now charges 15 euro for a 24 hour period. their hourly rate is much more that the internet cafe just down the street. The hotel I was in the weekend before last charged even more. How much time do you expect to spend on line anyway? The only reason I am is because I needed to sit for a few minutes with a coffee since I've been walking all day.
Answer 10 :
Definitely forget about the laptop!! a) You'll have to carry the extra luggage, mostly as hand luggage. This means you have to go through annoying security checks as well, and you'll always keep an extra eye on it. I once had a laptop with me to London and it got stolen within the first hour at a Burger King in the 30 seconds that we left unattanded. b) With laptops many hotels charge high rates for internet access- just like they charge for the minibar. c) You can easily find internet cafes around. Most give an hourly access for 1-2 € and you can use this many times within a week till you consume this 1 hour. d) You don't even have a laptop which means you don't need it in your daily life. So why bother !?
Answer 11 :
Why would you need a computer while you're travelling? Unless you plan on doing business or uploading thousands of photos, don't consider dragging something like that around. There is internet everywhere. EDIT*-- someone said it would be a 'money saver'?!! How is it a money saver to BUY a laptop in order to save a few Euros a week in internet cafe fees?
Answer 12 :
You should use the internet cafes but I don't recommend looking at porn though lol.

Answer 1 :
the plugs are different from the states
Answer 2 :
France and Spain have the same outlets. you need nothing else than a plug converter US-European. you can get it in every electronics store. the voltage in Europe is 230V/50Hz so you can use your charger without a problem.
Answer 3 :
you first need to get the outlet adapters for france and spain. (the shape) You dont need a converter unless the voltage is hight than the 240 limit. Your MacBook will be safe. I used it in China where it is 220 volts!!! Only warning is that the adapter will get hot, but dont worry about it frying up.
Answer 4 :
Your laptop will operate PERFECTLY on the European voltage and frequency (220~240 VAC @50Hz). You should go to a travel store and get a plug adapter only, you won't need a bulky transformer. Your wireless Internet should also work if you're in proximity to a wireless hub.
Answer 5 :
Try radio shack for adapters.

Should I take my laptop with me to Europe

Should I take my laptop with me to Europe?
This summer, I am going to be spending two months in Europe. One month will be spent studying at a university in France, and the other month will be spent travelling. I plan to visit the bordering countries of France for 4-5 days a piece and spend my time in hostels. I know that my time as a student I would love to have my laptop for watching DVD's (and workout DVD's so I can workout in my dorm room), talking to my SO, reading and connecting back home via the Internet, and also working part time to make a little extra cash. This all sounds fine and dandy, but I know myself, and I know that when I am in Italy having a nice pasta dinner, I am going to be worried if my laptop is still back at the hostel where I left it. I know the luxury of the internet and a media center at my fingertips would be nice, but I am still having reservations. What do you think? Have you had a similar experience? Thank you for your help!

yes
Answer 2 :
most def..if not u will regret it
Answer 3 :
i think that should be up 2 u
Answer 4 :
yes..... but keep it in a save place when you are not using it
Answer 5 :
Unless you plan on carrying it with you everywhere you go plan on losing it. Stuff gets stolen from hostels all the time.
Answer 6 :
hah, why is this on your list of "worries?" yes you should.
Answer 7 :
Buy a secure cable lock that plugs into the back of your Laptop and is then secured around an unmovable object. + most hostels and hotels have some type of valuables safe that you can use for storage. Simply by email check before going. Go Surf & Enjoy
Answer 8 :
yea you will get bord the way there sooo take it trust me its the best choose Hope i help have a greate day
Answer 9 :
yes
Answer 10 :
Why not? I moved to England 5 years or so ago and I always take my laptop with me when I go back to the US. You may be better off using web cafes for internet access but using it for films and stuff will work....the only other option you could consider is a portable DVD player. Very good and a great deal cheaper.
Answer 11 :
Yes, you should have your laptop at your disposal. A security cord works well. Also, I don't know if you rent or own your home. If you do, see if there is a floater that covers your computer while traveling in Europe. (If you are a USAA member their renters policies have this automatically, but you must be in the military or the child of a current member.)

Should I bring my laptop with me to Europe

Should I bring my laptop with me to Europe?
This summer I will be spending two months in Europe. 6 weeks will be studying (so I will be staying in one city, for the most part, with maybe a few weekend trips). The remaining few weeks will be spent doing some travelling to neighboring countries. My big question- should I take my laptop with me? My main concern is theft, and having to be constantly on guard. However, my laptop will be my main form of communication with my boyfriend, family, and friends back home. What do you think? Do you have any tips for travelling like this with a laptop? I have heard that the Sony Mylo might be a good alternative, but I am unsure. Thank you for your input!

Answer 1 :
Internet cafes are pretty easy to find - that might be another option for you if you decide not to take it. How about the iPod Touch? It does WiFi internet/e-mail as well!!
Answer 2 :
yes bring it, just make sure you back all your material and protect it when you need to be away from it.
Answer 3 :
Yes, but carry it with you EVERYWHERE. It will be a pain, but better then not being able to contact those you want. I have a sturdy case that I wear like a purse...
Answer 4 :
Do you want it stolen? Would you like to drop and brake it? Leave it at home and use what is available in Europe. It might surprise you. Then you only need to hang on to your wallet and passport. You should show how much you are doing by not communicating every day. Focus, for the first time in a long time on work, not on the relations back home. What did people do before laptops, put more into life and got a lot more out of life.
Answer 5 :
check out this site, they give you a sony vaio laptop FOR FREE!! i got mine last week and it's smokin'!

Traveling to Europe (Italy,Swistzerland, Spain, Germany and France) using laptop necessary gear to plug?

Traveling to Europe (Italy,Swistzerland, Spain, Germany and France) using laptop necessary gear to plug?
I have an xpsm1210 from dell and need to know what do I need to plug it to the 230V@50Hz electric service in Europe
Other - Europe - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The power supply that comes with the laptop should accept 230 V@50 Hz as well as US voltage/current, so you do not need a voltage converter. You can check the label on the power supply to verify this. You will only need the plug adapter that converts from the US style two flat prongs to the European two round prongs for the countries you've listed. I've used my laptops in all of these countries with no problems. If you go to the UK, you will need a different plug adapter - they're widely available and relatively inexpensive.
Answer 2 :
All AC adapters for dell XPS notebooks have a multiple power input from 100-240 volts. You just need a plug adapter to fit it in the wall outlet (type C of attached link) which is commonly used in continental europe for appliances not requiring grounding.
Answer 3 :
just need a plug to fit European outlets. That little box on the cable converts it all, you don't need a special adapter.

What do I need to buy to charge my laptop?

Using electricity in Europe....what do I need to buy to charge my laptop?
So, soon I am going to Germany. I live in the U.S. and I'm bringing my Laptop computer and cell phone with me. I need to be able to use them so what do I need to buy so I can recharge them since Germany doesn't have the same electrical outlets as in the U.S. I know I need an adaptor or something, but where would I get it and what kind do I need?
Other - Electronics - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Chances are you won't need a power converter because most laptop supplies are switching type supplies but you may need a receptacle adapter both of these are available at Radio Shack if you need them and I think most big box stores sell them as well (walmart, target, etc.)
Answer 2 :
It's easy enough to check for yourself. If you look at the power packs for your phone and laptop, somewhere on the label it will say something like "Input 100V-240V" or "Input 100V-120V". If it has the first one, it is a dual voltage power supply, and all you need is a 110V to 220V plug adapter (Be sure to specify that it is for Germany, since the outlets are not the same in all the European countries). You should be able to get them at any decent electronics store. If you can't get one in the states, they are very easy to find here in Germany. If it has the second one, it is NOT dual voltage and you will need to get a 220V power supply for that device. these can usually be ordered from the manufacturer, or you can get a generic dual voltage power supply, just make sure that you match the connector, output voltage and amperage. By the way, I hope it's a tri-band cell phone, or you will run into issues, since the cell phones in Europe use a different RF frequency than the phones in the States.

Traveling to Europe and wondering if my step down converter will be safe for my laptop...Help?

Traveling to Europe and wondering if my step down converter will be safe for my laptop...Help?
My laptop uses a Sony 19.5V AC adaptor. Says input 100-240V. Output 19.5V. My converter is a Simran step down voltage converter. Says its for use with computers, VCRs, etc. not exceeding 200 Watts. Then says Input 220/240 AC. Output 110/120V. Power 200 Watts. Is this sufficient and safe for my computer? Thanks for any advice!
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
If your laptop power supply says input 100-240V you do not need a converter to use it in europe, just get a plug converter to let it fit in the socket and your AC adapter will function just fine on the euro voltage.
Answer 2 :
If your Sony AC adapter can be switched to 240V (if there's an actual switch on it or it switches automatically) you do not need that second converter. You'll need just a little adapter for the plug itself, because we have flat prongs and most European countries have round prongs. You can buy a set of them at Radio Shack and other stores like that. If your Sony AC adapter/charger cannot be switched to 240V, use that second adapter with input of 220/240 and output of 110/120 (and the Sony thing set the way it is now in the US.) Looking at the specifications of the devices you have, they are fine. You'll be OK.

I was going to buy a voltage converter to use in Europe

I was going to buy a voltage converter to use in Europe so I could charge my laptop but....?
I looked on the back of the box and it said in small print not to use with computers. I assume that this means not to use on a desktop and it would be ok to charge my laptop. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.
Laptops & Notebooks - 7 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Desktop/laptop doesn't matter. You probably need a voltage converter that works with small loads and gives you a real 60HZ sinewave. Try Radioshack, they list everything you need and you can get one for about $30 or less.
Answer 2 :
I think that there is some kind of risk with using it with a lap top because they are so expensive, and the company dosnt wanting you getting mad mad at you if something goes wrong with it.
Answer 3 :
Most laptop charger are wired to use current between 100 and 240 Volts. I have a Dell and a HP-Compaq that I have used in Europe and Asia, without a voltage converter. Check on the back of your AC power adaptor. If it is the case, you don't need a converter but a simple plug adapter.
Answer 4 :
Look on the back of the transformer (the big black thing in the middle of your cable) and see if it says this somewhere on there: "Input: 100-240V~" If so, you only need to get this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2104181&cp=&origkw=europe&kw=europe&parentPage=search
Answer 5 :
what you do is check out from your laptop company can it work in Europe befor you go pluging it in or there will be a spark and a bang then windows will not load up if its a dell laptop when the spark and bang go watch out for the fire from the battery .check with the laptop company im sure it will work but its aways best to check frist
Answer 6 :
I am an electricity engineer, I never use something before I check its quality or the way of it works. you should know how many voltage and current does ur pc need, after that compare that to the converter, then if it was ok u can use, if not, go for other thing.
Answer 7 :
There is no effect on a laptop or desktop all American computers In this day and age the computers are sold in Europe HP Compaq IBM and they make them to work in US and Europe and there are no changes made to them when they sell them in Other countries except for the keyboards and language settings. . No voltage converter is necessary but each country has different connections, so just go to radio Shack in your area and they have connections for all countries, unfortunately the power system in Germany France, Spain, England is all different connections.

it should work, yes if it goes from the voltage in Europe to the voltage in the us(if that's were you are) then yes it should work hope this helps!
Answer 2 :
most likely you don't need that Converter Transformer. the vast majority of the laptop power supplies (chargers) are made for an input voltage of 100 - 240V AC, 50/60Hz. (even my 8 year old charger already has this capability). check the sticker on your charger and if it indicate these numbers, all you need is a simple plug converter like this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Travel-Changer-Adapter-Plug-US-USA-to-European-Euro_W0QQitemZ270238980290QQihZ017QQcategoryZ88759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem those plug converters are available in every electronics store.

Laptop used in Europe now experiencing problem.?

Laptop used in Europe now experiencing problem.?
I just got off the phone with one of my friends who was on a trip to Europe. He had the power adapter and when he plugged the laptop in he experienced a spark. Now, whenever he tries to boot his computer he experiences a blue screen very briefly then the computer restarts. The boot process gets to the point where there is the windows logo with the loading bar beneath, then the BSOD appears for just milliseconds. What would be some probable causes of the problem? How could I go about fixing those problems? "The boot process gets to the point where there is the windows logo with the loading bar beneath, then the BSOD appears for just milliseconds." If the boot process gets that far, wouldn't the motherboard have to be working?? I kinda guessed that if I just re-installed my operating system, or did a OS repair I should be good.
Laptops & Notebooks - 1 Answers

Answer 1 :
in Europe the default output voltage for home use is 220 or 230V, if the power adaptor didn't support this voltage or it had no switch for selecting input voltage 110/230 then I'm afraid it fried the laptop's motherboard. Later edit: Did your friend tried to start the laptop just on batteries (without being plugged), hopefully only the power adaptor is fried and that may cause the problem. Just a guess.

Answer 1 :
Yes you should. I would just to be safe, but most likely you will need one.
Answer 2 :
yes you will need a set of plugs and possibly a voltage converter I have tried to help you by answering your question, now it's your turn to help... Would you vote for my niece Eileen Friedman (2nd from the left) online? Every vote for her bring us one step closer to a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. http://abcnews.go.com/abcnewsnow/PictureOfHealth/
Answer 3 :
In my experience you wont have to worry about a transformer. However that doesn't mean you should just try to plug your laptop right away. Check the power supply of your compter's plug on it there should be a sticker with a bunch of writing. If you see "INPUT 100-240V" that means you can plug your computer in with just a simple plug adaptor like this one http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?&storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&partNumber=575638&cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Shopping-_-Technology_%253E_Batteries_-_-575638-AC5&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=575638 However if it is only marked for 100-120 then you'll have to look into getting a transformer as well since you're going to an area that uses 220 voltage which should be something like this or even larger. (we had some in germany that were like cinderblocks good thing they were cheap) http://www.international-electrical-supplies.com/international-voltage-converters.html But from what I've seen on most laptops you'll only need the simple plug adaptor so if you got a US plug it can fit into the european round styled. http://concierge.typepad.com/cntraveler__80days/images/2007/05/10/plug.jpg Hope this helps and that you'll have a good time over there.

I was wondering if I kept it locked up in a locker

Should I bring my laptop to Europe?
It is worth about $800. I will be staying at a lot of hostels so it seems a prime place for it to get stolen however, I was wondering if I kept it locked up in a locker, if that would be enough to keep it from getting stolen?
Other - Europe - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
You'll have to balance your need against the possibility of loss. Why are you bringing it? For internet/email access? There are plenty of internet cafes around Europe that you can use. Is it work-related? You could just load your needed documents onto a flash drive and use the cafe's computers. I always bring mine, but then, I always stay in hotels.
Answer 2 :
It generally isn't worth the effort to bring your laptop along unless you need it for business. Most places here in Europe have pretty good public access to the internet. Even the small city that I live in here in Italy has some public access spots. The laptop is likely to be just extra weight to lug around that's a target for thieves. I very rarely take one of my laptops with me even though I also stay in hotels rather than hostels. Basically, you need to ask yourself what you need the laptop for and where you'll be going.

You don't need a data plan on your laptop to connect to free public WiFi in EU. If you were going to try to use your own internet connection through Xfire or some other wireless company, then you would need one.

We purchased a plug adapter at local electric shop that converters North American plug to fit their three prong round outlets.........
Answer 2 :
You'll be OK voltage-wise. But buy a Spanish cable once you're there.
Answer 3 :
Most of Europe (except Britain, Ireland, and perhaps one or two other places) use a standard two-prong round outlet. If your laptop is good up to 240V then you're fine, you won't need to pack along a bulky converter; all you'll need is a simple plug adapter, which you should be able to find in any electronics shop. I'd recommend buying them stateside, but you can often find things like that in airports or other traveler-frequented areas... sometimes even hotels and hostels sell them. One tip, though: some older outlets will have a reverse grounding prong, usually on the upper side, so make sure whatever plug adapter you get has a hole for it (if it's the "full round" variety) or just get the narrow plug variety, which is usually narrow, six-sided and just has the two round prongs... a ground sticking out from the wall outlet wouldn't hinder that kind. It might not be a bad idea to have two or three of those, actually, in case you bring along one or two other appliances which are also 110-240V compliant. Just remember that if your travels DO take you towards the British Isles that their plugs are not standard European--they have those odd, bulky three-pronged plugs.
Answer 4 :
Don't just buy a cheap plug adapter---spend the extra money and buy a voltage converter. You can get a good one from places like Radio Shack for about $20. For something as expensive as a computer, you want to make sure it's protected. Many small appliances blow up when trying to use just a plug adapter.
