Why is my laptop shocking me when I charge it in Europe?

Why is my laptop shocking me when I charge it in Europe?
I'm studying abroad in Italy and I'm using an adaptor to charge my American Apple laptop. Whenever my laptop is plugged in it makes a buzzing sound and recently I can actually feel an electrical charge coming from my laptop when I touch it. It charging correctly, but I'm not sure if this is safe for my laptop? Any help?

Answer 1 :
the voltage might be too much for your laptop to handle. check the battery pack on the laptop and see what voltage it takes then see what the voltage is on the charger pack. be careful as to not giving too much voltage into the laptop or it will fry your battery
Answer 2 :
Europe has a different standard voltage than America does. Most newer laptops have an Input of 100 to 240 Volts, and 50-60 Hz. Your laptop AC adapter brick should list the voltage range its capable of handling. If its not capable of handling the higher voltage, then you will need a converter to plug your laptop into which will convert the voltage to something your laptop can use. If it is capable of handling this voltage then it is possible you have a short somewhere that is electrifying your case. If this happens in every outlet you plug it into, I would check your AC adapter to make sure it is putting out the proper voltage. Good luck!
Answer 3 :
Probably not grounded. Italy uses 220VAC 50 hz so your charger should handle that. But it appears the electrical system where you are using it is not properly grounded. Try reversing the plug at the outlet if it is not a three prong plug like in the USA

12 inch Powerbook. MAC. Easily adjusts to different languages, time zones, etc. AND comes with a power adapter with interchangable prongs, great for international travel. Lightweight and durable and MACs don't get viruses. Very user friendly. I highly recommend it. Good luck!
Answer 2 :
I agree--MAC Powerbook. No viruses, and you don't need to lug around a power converter.
Answer 3 :
I might suggest visiting here: http://www.kemplar.com/subnotebooks.php
Answer 4 :
Any type of macintosh computer will due
Answer 5 :
The best computer for on-the-go is the Toughbook from Panisonic, it has a durable steel casing and can withstand a couple drops to the ground, but is very expensive, starting at $1500. A Dell however can do the job perfectly, but if you want to take the computer back home to use, you may want to look in to a Sony Viao or a Toshiba.
Answer 6 :
I would buy a used 12 inch iBook.
Answer 7 :
Probably like the first guy said. Macs dont get viruses because they are so annoying of a system that most people dont have the system so why bother creating a virus for a small sect. I would go with something under 7lbs. I use a dell inspiron e1705 its light weight but has a 17'' widescreen display so it isnt very small
Answer 8 :
13.1" MacBook. They are small, compact, and light. And, Windows XP will run on it too. By the way, when are you leaving for Europe? I WANT TO COME! LOL

I believe your power supply will work on all European voltages. Check to see if it's marked for 120 to 240 Volts. The 60 Hz - 50Hz difference doesn't matter. Your biggest problem is adapting to the various styles of AC outlets. Radio Shack has a couple of adapter kits to fit the various European outlets; pick them up. Have a great trip!

Answer 1 :
Even if you were, how would you charge your laptop?
Answer 2 :
Fully Charge your iPod before you leave and when you get there, stop by an Apple store and buy a wall charger that has the two prong European plug, but you will need an adaptor if you travel inside the UK, because their outlets are different from the rest of Europe. Another option is to buy a wall charger here and buy an outlet converter that will convert a U.S. plug into another plug, they make converters that have every country built into it or individual ones that only work in one country.
Answer 3 :
If you are backpacking, then turn the music/movies off and enjoy all the nature and culture europe has to offer...
Answer 4 :
Options... 1. In the US, buy a travel adapter. Radio Shack is good with carrying these. 2. Buy the charger in Europe. Not recommended as they're useless in US If you just bring your USB cable, you can charge in any computer.

If I buy a laptop from any place in Europe, will it work in Portugal?
This is actually several related questions: 1) What places have similar electronic things (eg plugs, power level requirements..) to Portugal? 2) Would I -have- to buy in Portugal for it to work there? 3) How much would a cable to convert it from one plug to one that worked there cost? 4) Do countries in Europe use similar power systems (plugs, power level requirements, etc) or is each country different? If you can answer any or all of these I would appreciate it, thanks <3

Have you tried the computer's language settings?
Answer 2 :
Move back to the US. Sorry. Those sites detect your location according to what IP you connect from, and make adjustments accordingly. If they don't let you force it back to US defaults, you're pretty much stuck. There are proxies you can connect to which hide your IP, but most of those are already outside the US, so that won't really buy you much.
Answer 3 :
Use a proxy (proxy site or port proxy) that connects to a US server.

How can i bring a laptop from USA to Europe?
I live in Portugal, and I want to purchase the new macbook pro. In USA it costs like 500 euros less. I thought i friend could buy it in USA and bring it to Portugal. Will they check if its his in the airport? Can he bring it in the same box he bought in or does he has to pretend its his?
Packing & Preparation - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
He can carry it like any other hand luggage. US authorities do not care. Whether or not you have to report to customs on arrival in Portugal is another question.
Answer 2 :
Your friend can carry the laptop. He should take it as a carry on.They don't ask the ownership of the computer. They only care if someone is carrying something illegal or dangerous. Theres a chance they may check the box or ask him or open it to proove that its a computer. My sister has traveled the globe with her laptop. No one has ever questioned her about wether she owns it.
Answer 3 :
Technically he is supposed to declare to EU customs that he is bringing the laptop into the EU and leaving it there, so it would be subject to EU customs duty. But it's not likely that they'll check. If you think you are going to sneak it into the EU, I would not bring it in the same box he bought it in since most people who travel with their laptops don't bring that kind of stuff with them. It's worth noting that you will not be eligible for any warrantee/repair in Portuggal (if needed). You'd have to have the laptop brought back to the US for repairs under warrantee. And there may be some differences in what is pre-loaded onto the laptop from the US compared to what you get in Portugal.

Answer 1 :
You can keep in touch with everyone. You can upload your photos from your camera to the laptop to clear your camera's memory card for more pictures. Plus, you can look up everything from where to go, how to get there, what to see, etc. Most things you can do require the internet. However, most every place in the world these days (and most hotels) have the internet for you to use.
Answer 2 :
Well, you can track your emails, your banking accounts plus any overseas accounts you may have as well. I wouldn't go anywhere without mine..Even to the North Pole twice, my laptop went~!! I even use it to keep notes..Nice tool.. Your needs may be different than most, in that case, you're lucky not to have to worry abt lugging it around~~lol
Answer 3 :
It will be very useful for a thief. I personally would not take it, there are so many internet cafes for you to use. A laptop is just another valueable item that you could loose. And most of the times you'll be too busy with sightseeing and other activities to bother with using it. Online banking with wireless access is very unsafe, it is practically an invitation to clear out your account. The only sensible use I can see is when you go abroad to study at uni and need the laptop for this or if you are really into professional-level photography and need the PC to store and digitally process your pictures.

Answer 1 :
get an adapter. it'll be fine.
Answer 2 :
Usually laptops as portable device has adapter that can take US and EU voltage. All you need is just outlet adapter. To make sure about voltage check your laptop power supply, it should say Power: 110-240V or something like that. Adapter you need is something like this (US to EU adapter): http://www.allcam.biz/catalog/images2/allcam/us_eu_adapter2.jpg EDIT: this is a universal set and it does have US to EU adapter. http://www.jr.com/sima/pe/SMA_SIP5USB/#productTabDetails or buy just this: http://www.jr.com/franzus/pe/FRN_NW1C/
Answer 3 :
HI, to my knowledge all Toshiba laptops come with a universal type mains adapter which can cope with voltages from 110 - 250. Your laptop will work perfectly in France but you may need an adapter to to convert the mains plug to fit European sockets.
Answer 4 :
Yes, it should be OK. Just make sure you get a European - USA plug adapter. Also, you need to make sure that the input supply voltage of the power pack goes up to 240v, otherwise you risk blowing up the transformer. Hope this helps

Can an Alienware M18x laptop be shipped to Eastern Europe?
Hey, I'm current looking to buy an AlienWare M18x laptop. Problem is, The only dell site that offers it I've found is the US Dell, which, sadly doesn't have an option for intercontinental shipping. Any solutions offered are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer 1 :
Probably not, I live in Malta, which is considered as southern Europe, and I have the same problem. There are some solutions to this. You could always buy it off e-bay or amazon (if your country has an amazon site), obviously, you won't get it erectly from the source, and it might not be as safe, and don't forget to always check the warranty details. You could also try (i don't really recommended) some companies which give you an address in the USA, so, when they receive a package for that address, they automatically link it with your actual home address and send it there. There are various problems for this though, there would be a lot of handling of the product, so you have no idea what state the laptop would arrive in, warranty would probably be useless since it would be only applicable to the US. Still, if you're interested, there are companies such as Bongo International (Used By HoodieBuddy) and other sites which do this, for a fee. I never used them myself though, so I can't guarantee anything, but, if you really want to use them, I really do recommend looking up on their customer service and stuff. Also, you can check if Dell has a local website. Other than that, you could always try and see if there are any local Dell stores that - if they don't have Alienware laptops - could order it especially from you. Hope this helps, and good luck! :)

I would suggest you use a device like this: http://www.topmic.com/141-0703.html It works anywhere in the world. Its both an adapter and a converter. Best of luck.
Answer 3 :
Well he will need a power adapter. (no problem getting this in germany). But you should consider that dvds, games, even windows will not work on this computer if your son buys them somewhere in Europe (at least if you are not from "europe" as i assume).

If you are in the US you will need a power converter. The plugs in Europe vary by location and you cannot plug a standard US or Asian device in to a European out it. Also the current used varies contry by country and if the power is not properly converted over your equipment can brake.

Do i need some kind of plan for my laptop to use wifi in europe?

do i need some kind of plan for my laptop to use wifi in europe?
I'm going to Ireland, UK and France next month...and someone was mentioning data plans for your LAPTOP...do i really need that? In my books it said that there are plenty of wifi spots in cafes and hostels and stuff like that in europe...can't i just connect to those providers? Or do i need some kind of international internet plan? Couldn't reach anyone who could answer me on this.
Other - Europe - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
First off, Wireless cards (WIFI) on laptops cannot receive internet through cell phone data plans. You are talking about 2 different things. WIFI is from a Wireless router (usually) that your laptop can use when you connect to the router. (think wifi spots in cafes, starbucks, etc) Data plans are used when you plug a data receiver into your USB port that reads Cell phone signals. In this way you would buy it from a cellphone provider and use their data services like your cell phone would. These are 2 seperate things, which make your question... null.
Answer 2 :
There are a lot of free wi fi spots all over where you are traveling. If you need a constant connection go to any phone store once you get to wherever you are traveling to and you can buy a prepaid data usb device. I suggest if you absolutely do not need a laptop, go with an iPad or iPod touch, you can do all your emailing, skyping, gaming in a lot more portable package. Less of a problem if the thing gets damaged or stolen.

Will I have trouble powering my Laptop in Europe?

Will I have trouble powering my Laptop in Europe?
I will be going to the UK and Italy this fall. Will a plug converter (does not reduce power voltage) work for my laptop(HP Pavilion)? And are the car adapters the same in Europe as in USA?
Laptops & Notebooks - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You will also need to buy a power converter.
Answer 2 :
Not sure about car but an adapter will defanitley work
Answer 3 :
First Europe is not same adaptors as US, You will need a convertor easy to buy at any Source, As for using Laptop my Son has done this most hotels have either connections in rooms or a place where you can go and use their Computer free. I have done this so I have been there. I would add I was in UK my son was in Europe. It all depend on size of Hotel.
Answer 4 :
I'm pretty sure Europe uses 220 volts instead of the 110 volts that we use here in the States. I would suggest getting a 220v to 110v adapter for your wall connections. As far as the car connection, European cars have the same 12 volt cigarette lighters that American cars have, but if you're renting the car, just make sure you specify ASHTRAY and LIGHTER as an OPTION because not all cars have cigarette lighters in them. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Answer 5 :
UK power rarting is 220V, whereas US and other Europian countries are 110V. Having said that, you need not have to worry, as the adaptors now-a-day come with universal rating, i.e. ranges from 110-230V. The only thing you need to take with you is a plug coverter (US to UK) -- US looks like this l l, UK looks like this l ' l. The car adapters are the same -- they all run on 12V batteries with the same universal sockets.
Answer 6 :
Before you go check the input voltage on your psu label. It probably says 100 - 240v, this is ok, you just need the socket converter.

Should I bring my laptop to Europe?

Should I bring my laptop to Europe?
My wife and I are travelling through Paris/Belgium/Netherlands for the holidays. We'll be using public trains and busses to get around. The laptop would be nice to have for uploading photos each day and gathering useful local information. However, the downside is it's one more thing to lug around as we move through Europe. Thanks, I'm from the US. I have outlet adapters and, thankfully, I won't need a voltage converter.
Other - Europe - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Where are you from? If your not from Europe one point to consider is that the voltage system is different as well as they use the 2 pin plugs and sockets! You would probably have to bring a converter and travel adapter although your laptop ac adaptor should automatically convert the wattage but make sure it can first. Also to consider that sometimes the trains and buses can be quite full and having all the extra baggage makes it uncomfortable for everyone including yourself! I agree with you on the usefulness of having the laptop though. In the end you have to weigh the pros and the cons of having it with you. My advice - take it with you cuz there are many amazing things to see and take pictures of and lots of memorise to capture!!
Answer 2 :
Travelling light is a better way to go I think. You can always go to internet cafes and there is always more to carry than just the laptop (converters, etc.).
Answer 3 :
Yes, why not ?

What do I need to take my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop to Europe?
Do I need a plug adaptor or a power adaptor or both?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers

because europe uses 240 volt poser vs. our 120 volt you will need both, a power adapter (transformer) and the 2 prong plug adapter
Answer 2 :
before you do anything look at your power brick for your laptop. MOST power bricks handle 120-240volt range. If its listed at most you will just need an adapter to change the prongs for the european standard of wherever you are traveling to. You can buy those from radio shack or a local computer shop should have some adapters in stock.

Is it safe to bring laptop to Europe?

Is it safe to bring laptop to Europe?
I am fine traveling with my laptop through an airport, carrying it, taking it on a plane, etc. But... I am a little uncomfortable leaving it in the hotels. I'm not staying in any "bad" areas, but do you think its worth taking the chance? I don't have any confidential information on my laptop but my parents would kill me if I lost it. Is it worth it? i'll be in Europe for 3 weeks.
Packing & Preparation - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It depends on how long you are going to be in Europe for. Most hotels provide safes, and are very secure.
Answer 2 :
It's just material thing. Don't sweat over it, but don't do anything foolish like leaving it around or walking with it down dark alleys. You wouldn't do that in this country either. Just be careful and if it does get ripped off, you'll be able to get another one eventually. Be sure to have everything backed up just in case.
Answer 3 :
it depends of the country, but i was in usa with my laptop in an hotel in atlanta, and someone stole me ! i live in france and hotels are a very safe place here, you can bring your laptop with no fear at all ! i think in another countries like bulgaria, poland, romania, italy, prefer a hight rate hotel, but in france, spain, uk, germany, portugal, belgium, netherlands and nordic countries, it's very safe!
Answer 4 :
In general, when traveling you should only take what you absolutely NEED. Anything left at home means less weight to carry around and less worry. That goes double for the laptop. If this is a pleasure trip, why do you want to take it ? If it's for internet access, it MIGHT be more convenient to use a laptop from your room, but many hotels now have a "business center" or similar with computers available for guest use, sometimes for a fee, sometimes free. All major cities also have internet cafes where you can pop in to check your email or whatever. If you have any question about taking it, then you can probably afford to leave it at home. And if there is a real NEED for it, then you'll find a way to keep it safe. BTW - it is now permissible, when you cross borders, including returning to the US, for "the authorities" to inspect the contents of your laptop. Even if there is nothing bad for them to find, it's another hassle you can avoid most easily by leaving it at home.
Answer 5 :
It's safe as long as you dont carry it around or leave it unattended even for a second. I was robbed of my laptop near the Grand Plaas in Brussels, Belgium, when I put it down to take a picture. It is also unsafe to leave laptops on baggage racks on trains or in the lobbies of hotels, supermarkets etc. Most hotels in Europe offer Internet access either free or for a reasonable fee. I would suggest you use these, rather than undergo the hassles of carrying your laptop- which can get damaged in travel. The only problem with using Internet at hotels in Europe is their keyboards. They will usually be set for the local language. That can be easily solved if you ask the attendent to set the keyboard to English.
Answer 6 :
depends on the countries you're travelling too. europe is not one big country that's all the same

Is it safe to use a laptop I bought in Europe (using one of those power converters)?
I have a laptop that I bought in the United States. I know that the electricity in America and Europe is different. That being said, would it be safe to use this laptop in Europe if I used a power converter? Or would there be complications? Thanks Kamil, you're polish aren't you? I'm also polish. I've seen that first name a lot with Polacks.

Answer 1 :
Take a look at your power supply. Almost all laptop power supplies are good for any voltage between 100 - 240 VAC. If that's the case, all you need is the appropriate plug adapter at the end of the cord to use it anywhere.
Answer 2 :
Check the fine print on the converter. If it says 90-250V 50-60Hz, it's fine. If it says 110V 60Hz, then it will blow up (maybe).
Answer 3 :
You don't even need a power inverter just a plug adapter. The laptop adapter itself is a power inverter. I travel to europe all the time and jsut usa a small laptop plug.

Answer 1 :
I believe wifi is kinda standardized so as long as you are able to find a free hotspot or get the security code/passwords you should be able to connect just fine.
Answer 2 :
Not as much as U.S. but every airport in the world is installing hotspots.
Answer 3 :
Some of the US channels and the European channels do overlap, so yes you may be able to connect to SOME but certainly not all of the hotspots. The best thing to do is just pick up a Eurpoean wifi card or USB adapter. Then you will have all the channels and it wont bother your US adapter at all. By the way Europe is way ahead of the US on hotspots. They actually have more and readily available ones for public use.

you just need to get your self an international power conversion kit... they are not too expensive but it will allow you to use almost everything you take with you over there.
Answer 2 :
k - frequent traveler here - laptops have been made from the day one with frequent travelers in mind so they operate on both 110 V and 220 V so that is NO PROBLEM you can travel with it anywhere in the world and yr power adapter will work - HOWEVER in Europe electric socket is slightly different so before you leave U.S. go to Radio Shack and buy European socket adapter and attach it to the end of yr power cord - ANOTHER THING - due to regional codings of DVDs yr DVD player in yr lapop WILL NOT work with DVDs bought in Europe solution: go to http://www.videolan.org and download VLC Player - previous versions of VLC Player had the ability to play ALL regional codings of DVDs BUT movie studios were after them to abandon that practice so i don't really know if the latest version of VLC Player will play other regional codings of DVDs or only North American coding of DVD - so when you come to Europe borrow DVD from yr friend in Europe and try it to play in VLC Player - if it plays great - if it doesn't - well you'll not be able to play European DVDs in yr computer if you buy any computer program in Europe it will work in yr laptop (same operating system of course) so that is also no problem one more thing - wireless is the same anywhere - wireless standards are made under the umbrella of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and they are same throughout the world

I̢۪m going to Belgium this fall and would like to take my laptop. Most websites say I̢۪ll need a voltage converter for my laptop but a few say I don̢۪t. The voltage converters I̢۪ve seen on line say they̢۪re not to be used for TVs or computers. Also the airlines say I̢۪ll need an adapter to use a laptop on the plane but they don̢۪t say much else. Answer 1 :
Look at the power supply for your laptop, there should be a label on it. If it says something loke 100-230V 50/60HZ your laptop will run anywhere in the world without a voltage converter or transformer. However you will need a plug adapter, go to www.kropla.com and you can find the voltages and plug types for anywhere in the world. Check out www.seatguru.com to find out which aircraft adapter you may need for your laptop. Some aircraft are now using 110v power. If you are flying economy class, it will be a rare aircraft that has power plugs. Magellan travel has a nice little adapter that covers several plug types and has a built in surge protector and usb charging plug. Roam around on the kropla site and you'll find out lots of good stuff. I have used my laptops in 9 countries in Europe so far.

It is best to strap it to your chest, so it blocks the bullet from your heart. Seriously, Europeans have as many lap tops as Americans, so treat it just like you would if you lived in LA or NY city. Common sense. Have a fantastic, worry-free trip! OH Yeah! Just remember that there are two prices for food in Italy, tourist and local. Make a local friend and you will save a bundle of money. The food is heavy, but the wine is the best. Just remember where home is! Have fun.
Answer 2 :
Other than the mafia over there, you should be all set. :) On a serious note, I haven't heard of Italy/Rome being a place of lots of crime. In fact, I think Italy is more safer than the US. Just take care of your stuff and you should be all set. Don't show it off when you don't have to. Like on a train of something, keep it tucked in your briefcase and keep your briefcase in your site.
Answer 3 :
Well u should be careful everywhere u go these days...u shouldn't walk with the laptop in the street..a lots of east people still stuff in italy....leave it home.
Answer 4 :
I took my laptop to Europe with no problems, of course it depends where you're staying (hotel v. youth hostel v. B&B). You might ask at the reception if there is a safe where you could store your laptop for extra security. However, depending what you plan to do with the laptop, you might be better off to leave it home and just use internet cafes, which are quite prevalent and not too expensive. Most internet cafes have full service computers with MS Office, etc. booted on them and available for your use. Also, don't forget to make sure your power adapter is dual voltage, or get a voltage adapter if necessary.
Answer 5 :
I was in Europe for about 3 weeks with my laptop. I was quite comfortable. I suggest you look around for sale and affordable accomodation.

It depends on the country. You can get a few hotspots all over the continent for free if you have wifi. Starbucks usually has routers but they charge you a hefty price. There are also many internet cafes that you can use and the fee is sometimes less. Now having said all that I was fairly lucky by going to various squares, sitting in a cafe and letting my computer find somebody's undedicated router.
Answer 2 :
thats pretty much the best answer... and most places in europe are close to squares and cafes etc... you could probably pick up a free hotspot connection. My friend living in Belgium has a wireless modem (only plugs into her computer - no phone line OR cable) and i think its about 30 euros per month for 1 gig limit... but im sure there are better "wired deals" but thats all i know.

A TRIP!!! Experience and nice moments make life great, not material stuff. So go for a trip and have an awesome time!!! all the best
Answer 3 :
Get a laptop now, and then start saving to take a year abroad during college. Hopefully the dollar will be stronger by then, but in any case, you will have so much more time to do more things, to backpack, and spend months kicking around the monuments and museums, live among the people, really KNOW places. You'll be more mature and able to REALLY appreciate the opportunities. Those trips are intended to be like appetizers, to give you a taste so you want to go back.

What do I need to bring with me to use my laptop in Europe?

What do I need to bring with me to use my laptop in Europe?
Will my internet connections work in Italy and Bulgaria. Which type of cables and plugs or converters do I need?
Packing & Preparation - 5 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
YOu need to buy a transformer for the plug. so you can plugg it in there. the one with the two circles thats what theirs looks like.. Idk about the internet connections
Answer 2 :
Yes, it will work if you are connecting to a local wireless hot spot. In Europe you will need an adapter for sure. Most of the online stores that are geared towards electronics will sell them. Type European adapter in the google search engine. You may not need a converter if your laptops adapter can convert to 220 on its own. Read the lable on the adapter box. It's the box that is on your laptop's power cord. The Input should say something like: INPUT: 100-240v. if it doesn't go to 220 you will need a converter for the trip for sure. Remember just because you have the adapter doesn't mean that it will convert your laptop's power automatically. If your laptop isn't 220 compatible then you will need "both" the adapter and the converter.
Answer 3 :
I live in Italy and all my laptops have been from the U.S. (on my fourth now, I think). First you need to be sure you have a transformer (most laptops have this build into the cord, but not all) and then you will need a plug converter to plug it into the outlets in Europe. There is a standard European plug but some countries like England have different ones so best to check this out at a travel store or electronics store like Radio Shack that sells the converters. As for your internet connection, well, it depends on a number of things. If you are using dial up, then you need to be sure you have a provider that has international numbers. I use AOL but I understand AT&T Global is quite good. If you have a wireless connection, you might find hotspots that let you get on but they are not that common here in Italy. I'd check to be sure the hotels I'm staying in have this. More common is an ADSL hookup which will allow you to get on with a cable. Will you be working out of an office or just at hotels? Best to check to see if the hotels have these services.
Answer 4 :
You may need a plug adapter (don't know where you're from). Fortunately, Italy and Bulgaria use the same plugs (two round prongs) so you don't have to buy two. Laptops almost always come with its own voltage converter (the box thing connector on the cord), so the only thing to worry about is being able to plug it into the wall outlet. At most fancy hotels, there are outlets for different plugs, or housekeeping can bring you an adapter. As for internet connection, you can go to a hotspot, or your internet provider may allow for international roaming. I have international roaming with my ISP but I have to pay extra for that service.

Been to Europe 6 years. The normal power situation is double.over there. 110 here, 220 there. Power converters or adapters are essential if your laptop doesn't have one. They are actually inexpensive and readily available over there.
Answer 2 :
bon voyage u'r notebook & power adapter are built to operate globally all u gotta get is a plug adapter kit, as below http://www.ciao.co.uk/APC_International_Notebook_Plug_Adapter_Kit_C6_3_Prong_Power_cable_kit__5634012 the reason being that the power plug / sockets in different countries are shaped different true voltage levels are different, but all u got to do is read the power adapter specifications which should read 100 - 250 volts input, 50 / 60 hz your output is constant 19.5 volts dc, irrespect of input voltage check it out & let me know ...

You are saying wich make Some new Toshiba only need a plug adapter. (transformer comes with the notebook) Otherwise just buy a voltage transformer at any electronic stores. cost is anywhere from $30 to $50
Answer 2 :
Get a power converter, they convert the 220 to 110. You can use this on all your american appliances.
Answer 3 :
Check it it might be dual powered then all you have to do is switch the switch from 110 to 220 (you might not need to do that) and buy an adapter for the country you'll be in. Otherwise you'll have to buy a power converter.
Answer 4 :
You most likely will need nothing more than a plug adaptor, almost all laptops will accept 100V-240V 50-60Hz input and will convert the input voltage to the correct output voltage for your laptop automatically. Just check the "little box" on your adaptor/converter cord, if it says 100-240V 50-60Hz input, you're ready to go except for any plug adaptor you may need for the country you're going to, you can check that on this website: http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm

It is not necessary but is always a good idea to protect against power surges.
Answer 3 :
Surge protectors will attempt to level out spikes and surges. Surges, unlike spikes (short peak voltage lasting under 1 second) are longer lived increases in voltage which can blow out your computer, the charging circuit or both........ It would be wise to pack one or buy one when you get there since it would be difficult to find a Euro based surge protector in the US......but definitely get one for the time you are away and gift it to someone before you leave to come back.

Do they have the the power surge thingy in the stores in the airport?

Should i bring my laptop to navigate through europe?

should i bring my laptop to navigate through europe?
I was going to take a trip to Europe in the fall and was trying to decide whether or not to bring my laptop along with me. I would be using it to book hotels/hostels for the upcoming stops. It is an older laptop and probably weighs 15 pounds. Would I have any problems using a laptop from the states in Europe and getting free internet, or would it just be easier to use internet cafes?
Other - Europe - 7 Answers

yeah, i'd do it.
2 :
Umm, if you're staying in hotels and hostels chances are that they won't have internet unless you're staying in upscale expensive places. You'll probably wind up going to an internet cafe anyway - save yourself 15 pounds of luggage!
3 :
It is more practical to take your lap top with you.Internet cafes in Europe are expensive.Just make sure that the hotels you are staying at provide free Internet access.
4 :
damn 15 pounds how will you connect to internet do you have a wireless plan for it? hmm and you have to charge it
5 :
When your laptop has wireless lan then it will be no problem as there are many internet cafes or hotspots you can use your laptop for free. You also can book hotels with internet access...sometimes for free sometimes you have to pay for it.
6 :
1. You must check, whether your laptop has a voltage switch from 110 to 230 volts, since all European countries have 230 volt system. Otherwise you will need an additional voltage converter from 110 to 230 volts. 2. Check with your airline on weight limitation. Paying overweight fare may be more expensive than using internet cafes abroad. 3. Most hotels/hostels will help you with booking for upcoming stops.
7 :
yes, great idea

What's the procedure if you want to bring a laptop from Canada to Europe?
I want to buy a laptop from Canada and bring it to Europe (Romania more precisely) through a friend who is returning from there. Does he have to pay twice (once in Europe and once in Canada) the tax or what's the procedure? thanks:D he is bringing 1 other laptop too.. for himself so he can't pretend he has 2 laptops hand luggage :|

1 :
You only pay tax to get into Romania. However you might as well just class it as hang luggage! get rid of the box and use a laptop carry case! No one will say you've bought it and your avoiding the tax! Seriously.. Just protend its hand luggage :D
2 :
This is a Romanian tax issue. He will pay Canadian taxes, and there is no way to avoid those unless the laptop is delivered directly overseas. Picked up in Canada and transported by hand, he'll pay the tax. He will them likely pay tax and duty in Romania, depending on their tax system. He will need to know the country of origin for the unit (it's almost certainly NOT Canada), and carry proof of the value (the sales receipt). For the person who suggests smuggling (that's what bringing it in hand luggage is): worldwide, customs officials are very adept at spotting false claims. Body language, tensions in the voice, etc. One slip, and the person is subject to a search. The search will quickly ascertain that the laptop is brand new. At that point he is at risk of fines, jail, and confiscation of any suspicious goods. He will also go on an Interpol list of smugglers, making ANY international travel a major hassle. That's a REALLY stupid idea.

Get a universal power adaptor - from luggage stores with the travel goods
3 :
with a power adapter that works in Poland. They sell them at travel shops, but they will ahve them there, as well.
4 :
Go to a travel store and purchase a travel voltage converter.
5 :
but an adapter plug and then plug it in
6 :
You can purcahes a plug in converter. This converts the power in a foreign country to the AC current that we have here in the US. You can purchase a converter at any electronic store. Be sure to tell the salesperson what you will be using it for. There are also converters that are equipped with surge protection.
7 :
Look at your charger. Most will go from 100-240 volts 50-60 cycle automatically. All you need is a plug adapter that cost a few dollars at any travel department or shop.
8 :
An adapter might work, but be very careful. I was in Europe last February and took an adapter for my curling iron and let's just say, I needed a hair cut after I used it. The wattage is different in Europe and it kind of super heated my curling iron and it burned my hair off. Also, we sent a fiber optic angel to a relative there with an adapter and it burned up that little angel. I would call HP to ask them what your options are. Be careful not to burn up your laptop by using an adaptor. Good luck and have fun!
9 :
The same why you charge anything in Europe. With an adapter. You plug it into the wall and then plug whatever you want up to it. http://www.travelessentials.com/department/Electrical/Outlet_Adaptors/18501030034.html
10 :
Get a universal power adapter from your local store. They sell them everywhere. Food stores, pharmacies, electronic stores, luggage stores, office supply stores, even your local 7-11 might have one!

What to be careful about when buying laptop in the US and then taking it to Europe?
I am planning on buying a laptop soon and will take it with me to Europe quite often. Is there something that I need to be careful with when taking it to Europe? Will DVDs bought in Europe play on this laptop?

The international warranty will only be valid outside the US for US citizens (which if your not a US citizen and the computer breaks down in Europe is really going to cause you a lot of trouble). I wouldn't expect DVDs bought in Europe to play on it (at least not without changing the setting so that DVDs bought in the US won't play, and you can only do that a limited number of times). In terms of power supply you probably won't have any problems just using dumb plug adapters (which are pretty cheap), laptop power supplies tend to be able to handle any voltage and frequency you can find anywhere in the world. Though if you plug something other than your laptop bought in the US into the plug adapters make sure it can handle 230 V (or 220 V or 240 V, they're all now the same thing) and 50 Hz (otherwise you'll hear a bang and see smoke) and that if it has a switch to select input voltage that it is set to 230 or 220 or 240 not 110 or 115 or 100 or 127.
2 :
I would buy a carrying bag from Custom-Kingdom.com, they're very sleek and will fit in the carry-on compartment with no troubles. I've never had trouble taking mine out of the country, but I always keep it onboard with me.

As long as the laptop has a wireless card either internal or external, it should pick up on any hot spot where ever you go. The Internet Service Provider has nothing to do with it, exept for when you have a network setup at home with your wireless router that is connect the your modem, which would be in some way connect to the Internet you pay for.
2 :
Vodafone, very popular and many countries... now depends where do u travel
3 :
I live in Germany and use GMX. It gives me DSL 16,000 wireless. The connections are great and it is amazingly fast! As soon as you click a link the next page is open. Downloads are nothing. As for your cell phone, be careful! I know soo many people that have come to Europe and their phone works, but wait till you see the bill. I mean thousands of dollars! Leave the phone at home and get one here with a calling plan to the States, you can find them anywhere. But my advice is mainly for Germany, it depends where you are at. Have a great time!

A very good friend of mine in the US wants to buy me a laptop for achieving my bachelors degree here in Europe :) but we don't know if there are any unforseen complications of doing this. The only problem I can see is with the charger. In the US not only the plug is different but the voltage is also different (US 110 and EU 220). Could I buy a charger for the laptop in Europe? Are there any other problems I might face in doing this?

The only other problem you may have is with region-locked DVDs. DVD videos use different formats for America and Europe (NTSC and PAL respectively) so you can't watch European DVDs on an American laptop.

Europe!!!

Used a Laptop in Europe on a trip, had an adapter and when plugged in a spark occured.?
I just got off the phone with one of my friends who was on a trip to Europe. He had the power adapter and when he plugged the laptop in he experienced a spark. Now, whenever he tries to boot his computer he experiences a blue screen very briefly then the computer restarts. I am unsure as to how far into the boot process he gets because he is very computer illiterate. What would be some probable causes of the problem? How could I go about fixing those problems?

Oh this is probably not going to be good. Although adapters are available and fit in European outlets, there is more you should do than just use the adapter. The spark occurred because there was probably no ground on the item. I don't mean ground as in the third prong on our outlets, but a ground to prevent too many volts into the computer. Unfortunately we have a lower voltage than Europe, so if they try to plug something in here, it will just not run or sound like it's dying. If we plug something in over there it will overload. With a normal adapter, there is still the European amount of voltage going to the computer and this is what caused the spark. The reason that you can use something like a hair dryer in different countries is because they have a switch on them that increases the number of resistors that the electricity passes through to prevent overloading. Laptops have this also, but your friend mostly likely did not change it. At least the majority of laptops that I have seen have a switch that does the same thing as the hair dryer switch. As far as fixing it, I would take it down to a computer repair place, because they have tools that can find the problem of where the break in the circuit is and may be able to fix it. They will be able to tell you what to do though. Hope this helped.

i would say his motherboard is toast or else some of his components are toast and if hes computer is making a beeping noise hes memory(ram) or hard drive is broken
