Moving to Poland. Should I buy a laptop in Canada before leaving?
I'm selling my computer and buying a laptop. Wondering how the prices are for modern laptops in Europe. Seems to me that I'll be able to find a better price in Canada. What's your opinion on electronics prices in Europe? @Chad1112: that's no good. I know the prices in US/Canada, I'm interested in prices in Europe. Thanks though

Answer 3 :
I would say buy your laptop in Canada, computers seem to cost more in Poland than in Canada. We were in Poland a couple of years ago & were quite surprised at how costly computers were. There were a lot of used computer stores, just as there were in Canada a few years ago when a new computer cost about twice as much as it does now.
Answer 4 :
You can already buy one in Canada or if you cant really decide you can consider buying online since they also offer laptops with affordable prices.

What kind of computer access is there while backpacking through europe?

what kind of computer access is there while backpacking through europe?
I'm traveling to Europe for the first time in April. Do hostels have computers that you can rent or use? How do I find internet cafes? Are they expensive? I'd bring my laptop but it's way too much of a hassle, for many obvious reasons. I just want to have the option of access to research my travel options as well as contact with home.

Answer 1 :
Bringing your laptop is way to much hassle. In most towns you will find an internet cafe, and I found that many hostels also have internet you can use, but you can never be sure that you will have access. When you come to a new town keep your eyes open, that is mostly enough to spot an internet cafe, if not, ask at the desk of the hostel. If neither works, as at the tourist information office, they also know that kind of information. As for the price, that differs a lot, even within one town. Some are an Euro per hour, getting cheaper when you stay on longer, others cost an Euro for the first ten minutes, and sometimes there is free internet in the hostel.
Answer 2 :
You're right, schlepping a laptop, plug converters, electrical converters, plus the security issues...WAY too much hassel when backpacking. Or travelling at all. There are internet cafés everywhere. I paid about 1€/hour in Spain. probably the same all over. They are easy to spot. The signs say internet café. English, ish. However, you will need to translate everything. (which doesn't take all that long) and you will need to get used to different keyboards everywhere. They aren't all qwerty boards. It's interesting, though, sort of a different facet of the culture to get... Enjoy!
Answer 3 :
And don't forget about public libraries as well! They also might grant you internet access - there might be a small fee to pay, you have to book a time slot or there may be a certain time limit (like 15 minutes or so). but it's worth considering.

Flying internationally with laptop, do they let you through customs easily on the way back?

Flying internationally with laptop, do they let you through customs easily on the way back?
I'm going on a 14 hour flight to Europe for almost four weeks, and I'll be taking a laptop with me. Someone told me I should have proof of purchase, so that they don't hassle me on the way back in customs.. is this true?

Answer 1 :
Where are you flying from? If it's the UK, then there is no problem. Just carry it on with you, they usually ask you to put it through the scanner seperately but that's all. Done it loads, never had a problem.
Answer 2 :
Well it wouldnt hurt, but I really dont think what that person said is accurate. Thousands of people travel through customs every day with labtops, and they are not going to harrass every one of them. I am sure 5 -6 years ago when labtops were less common it could have been an issue, but today they are becoming almost as common as cell-phones. So I wouldnt worry about it.
Answer 3 :
Whoever told you that you should have proof of purchase is talking out their rear-end. The only time you would have an issue like that is if you bought your laptop overseas -- then they would ask you for proof of purchase. They'll X-ray it, and they may ask you to turn it on, but the exam will not be more intensive than that unless they suspect that you have something on your computer that you shouldn't, like child porn.
